PLAYING GOD A PERTH SALE STAR

Western Australia's reigning Horse of the Year Playing God gave the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale a terrific boost when he scored a resounding win in Saturday's Group One Kingston Town Classic (1800m). In bouncing back to his best, Playing God has able to defend his title in the race which shot him to prominence by winning as a three-year-old a year ago. A son of leading WA based sire Blackfriars, Playing God was given a perfect ride by Steven Parnham and he zipped clear on straightening and set up a winning break. He was still very strong to the line, cruising home to beat Ranger by a length, while exciting three-year-old King Saul was next home in third place.

Playing God, bred and sold by Durham Lodge, was purchased by trainer Neville Parnham for $27,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale. The four-year-old entire is raced by Colin Loxton's Cockatoo Ridge Syndicate - he also races Playing God's full brother, the group winner God Has Spoken.

"I was very confident that the horse would be hard to beat today," a delighted Neville Parnham said after the race. "I realised where we took the speed out of his legs leading into the Railway when he was back to 1600 metres after four solid runs at 2000." "We planned to ride him close on the speed and it worked perfectly - it seems a bit hard to make up too much ground on a day like today." "Steve rode him tremendous," he added. Parnham Snr fought back tears after the race - relieved and proud of his stable star for producing at racing's elite level.

"Everybody wrote him off and I was probably the only one who didn't," Parnham commented. "He'll go to the paddock now and then probably back to Melbourne." Parnham's son and winning rider Steven was not surprisingly all smiles in the winning enclosure after the race. "He's done a terrific job," the jubilant jockey said. "I have to take my hat off to the horse." "A big mention to the staff who've revived him. He was down and out - after the tough, wide run with weight in the Railway they changed his work around and got him back to here he is." "I'm very pleased. He got across nice and relaxed. The pace was nice. When I felt he was ready, I pulled him out and when I asked him he grabbed the steel and that's how he did it last year."

A magnificent advertisement for the WA thoroughbred industry, Playing God was bred and sold in Perth and is raced, trainer and ridden by West Aussies. The sire is based in the West as well in a fantastic result for the locals. Now a seven time winner, Playing God has boosted his earnings past $1.38 million - during a career which has seen him run against many of the best horses in Australasia.

Earlier this year at three Playing God won the Magic Millions Perth 3YO Trophy before heading to Melbourne and placing in both the Group One Australian Guineas and Cup - the latter to proven Flemington star Shocking. A three quarter brother to Playing God, by Blackfriars from Ruby Doll, is being prepared by the team from Durham Lodge for February's 2012 Perth Yearling Sale.

The good looking bay colt is catalogued as lot 21 and he will go under the hammer during the first hour of the auction on February 14.

BLACKFRIARS CHAMPION SIRE IN THE WEST

In an amazing result for Durham Lodge sire sensation Blackfriars has replaced their former champion sire Scenic by being crowned champion sire in the West for progeny earnings in the 2010-2011 season. Scenic arguably the best stallion to ever stand in Western Australia who died in 2005 had held the prestigious award for a number of seasons. Blackfriars ended the season with progeny earning of $3.73 Million which ranked him 26 in Australia and he was well clear of his nearest WA Rival in Viscount whose progeny earned $2.09 Million and was ranked 54th in Australia.

The season for Blackfriars was highlighted by siring his first Group 1 winner when Playing God won the Kingston Town Classic. Blackfriars also sired an incredible 16 individual Stakes performed horses during the season but without doubt his consistent stream of winners on the metropolitan tracks kept his tally ticking over and his name in the spotlight. In total he sired 56 individual winners for the season, more than 1 new winner a week.

On top of the feats of Playing God some of Blackfriars other notable stakes performed horses during the season included All Friared Up, Black Felix, Black Moment, Big Josh, Carry The Nation, Éclair Surprise, God Has Spoken, Miss Condition, Svara and the Tenby Friar.

Blackfriars will stand the 2011 season at service fee of $11,000 inc GST. He understandably is in high demand and only a limited number of bookings for the up-coming season remain.

DURHAM LODGE SERVICE FEES FOR 2011 ANNOUNCED

Durham Lodge today has announced service fees for its 2011 Stallion line up.

Blackfriars ($11,000 inc gst)

Blackfriars is set to be crowned champion sire in the West this season. The stock by Blackfriars have gone to the next level in the past season which has culminated in the emergence of super colt Playing God. Blackfriars is now the stand out proven stallion we have available to local breeders and with the best still ahead of him his fee represents outstanding value. We urge you to book early if you are considering Blackfriars for this season as we have been swamped by enquires for him.

Universal Ruler ($5, 500 inc gst)

Universal Ruler was extremely popular in his debut season covering 86 mares. The quality of his book covered was also extremely high and this will give this brilliant son of Scenic every chance to be an instant hit when his first crop hit the track. The market demands early returns on the track and Universal Ruler has all the attributes to be a sire in this category.

HURRICANE SKY ($5,500 inc gst)

At this fee Hurricane Sky must rate as one of the best value proven stallion in Australia. He has been a high class consistent sire for a number of years now. He has sired 4 individual Group 1 winners and has a winners to runners strike rate of a very high 65%. His runners from his local matings are just starting to emerge in a big way and the winners in the West are starting to roll in. Due to our re-structure and to give Hurricane Sky a chance to not to directly compete with Blackfriars he will stand the 2011 season at Quanah Park but still remains 100% owned by Durham Lodge.

* All fees include a Free Return *

For further enquires please contact Jeremy Smith at Durham Lodge on 9 571 0155 or 041 994 3356

Boom 3yo colt Playing God provided Blackfriars with his first Group 1 winner when successful in the Kingston Town Classic at Ascot on Saturday. It also provided 12- Time leading trainer Neville Parnham with his first success at Group 1 Level and his Jockey son Steven his first Group 1 Winner. Playing God was positioned just off the pace before going to the lead in the straight to get the better of runner up Impressive Jeuney. Playing God has now won 5 of his 9 starts with stakes earnings just shy of $600,000. Playing God was purchased by owner Colin Loxton for a bargain price of only $27,000 on the back of the promise shown by his bother who Colin purchased the year before and now races as God Has Spoken. Trainer Neville Parnham now has many options for the star colt but it is likely he will stay in the West and head towards the Group 1 WA Derby in April.

The win was fitting for his sire Blackfriars who has continually sired outstanding horses since his first crop but until Playing God came along a Group 1 win had eluded him as a sire.He is now not only a Group 1 Winner himself but a Group 1 Sire. The win on Saturday shot him up to 18th on the Australian Sires list for earnings this season. He is also clearly ahead on the WA Sires premiership table leading Danetime by over $400,000.

Scenic Blast joins Miss Andretti as the only sprinters to have won the award in the past 20 years.

Scenic Blast ( Scenic-Daughter's Charm) was bred by Durham Lodge Thoroughbred Stud at Muchea , WA and was sold at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearlings sale in Perth for $85000 .

IDYLLIC PRINCE WINS GOODWOOD AGAIN

Durham Lodge bred Idyllic Prince made it back to back Goodwood Sprint wins at Belmont on Saturday.

Idyllic Prince took his career earning to just shy of $500,000 when destroying a quality line up.Ridden to perfection by Jason Brown,Idyllic Prince settled a bit closer than normal but once Brown got the big striding Scenic to the outside the race was never in any doubt.
Trainer Jim Taylor has done a wonderful job with Idyllic Prince and although the galloper has undoubted top class ability,Jim has had to deal with severe feet issues when Idyllic Prince was diagnosed with having cancer in one of his feet.
Durham Lodge will offer an outstanding colt which is a half brother to Idyllic Prince at next January Perth Magic Million Sale.

FIRST PRINCE BORN AT DURHAM LODGE

The first foal from Universal Prince's first WA crop was born at Durham Lodge on Saturday 25th July.
The filly foal from a well bred Last Tycoon mare arrived about three weeks early but considering her early arrival she is a good size and is progressing extremely well.

If this is any example of what's in store the breeders who are awaiting foals by Scenic's champion son should be very excited.
Universal Prince's fee has been reduced this year to a very competitive fee of only $6,600 inc gst

UNIVERSAL PRINCE STOCK EMERGING

The stock of Universal Prince are really starting to hit there straps in the Eastern States. With his oldest stock only just 4yo's there are a few very promising gallopers starting to emerge by The Prince. Little Mel a lightly raced 3yo filly gained valuable black type over the Brisbane Carnival and has now put 5 wins together in good company.
Bede Murray currently has a number of Universal Prince youngsters in work and he is convinced the Prince will make the grade as very good sire but things the breed are horses that need time.
Bede had a very good winner by Universal Prince at Canterbury during the week in Universal Sound which he thinks will develop into a nice horse. Unfortunately Bede lost a 3yo by Universal Prince named Universal Gold recently which Bede thought would have put The Prince on the map in a big way. Universal Gold was more than a match for Predatory Pricer on the track and Bede mapped out ambitious plans for him but he was put down after suffering a broken pelvis in a freak accident.

DURHAM LODGE BUYS INTO UNIVERSAL RULER

Durham Lodge is delighted to announce that we have purchased an interest in last start stunning Group 3 Belmont Sprint winner Universal Ruler.
This will enable us to secure him to stand at Durham Lodge when he retires to stud in 2010.
The deal will see Universal Ruler race on this season and be set for some feature events over the Victorian Spring Carnival.

Universal Ruler was bred by Durham Lodge and is by our former champion sire Scenic out of a daughter of Group 1 AJC Sires winner Rhythmic Charm. Universal Ruler was sold in the same golden crop which contained Scenic Blast at the Perth Magic Million Sale.

We have no doubt that Universal Ruler has the right credentials to retire to stud this season but due to a series of unfortunate events at the wrong time he has missed out on his chance to win many more Group races. We have made the decision to race Universal Ruler on as he is well and in good form and seems to have overcome his setbacks. Being a son of Scenic and knowing they often improve with age was also a factor but importantly we feel Universal Ruler deserves the chance to improve his already impressive record by targeting some nice race over the Victorian carnival and any success will be a huge bonus.

Full credit must go to his trainer Darren McAuliffe as he has done a fantastic job to get this horse right after the setbacks and achieve an important Group 3 win last start. We know Darren may have his hands full as Universal Ruler has been getting quite bullish but a different environment based in Victoria may help in this regard. We are very happy that Darren has agreed to continue to train Universal Ruler when based in Melbourne as he knows the horse so well.

We are also very supportive of the other owners in Universal Ruler as they have great faith in him.. This has seen them actively securing quality mares for him when he retires to stud. Working in with them together we are confident Universal Ruler will get the best possible opportunity at stud to make it commercially.

We also have a little inside knowledge having bred the horse and know his pedigree so well. Being a son of Scenic is a great start but his speed through his dam-side may not be as well know. His dam Rulings was reported
to be one of the fastest early 2yo's at Randwick although she only scored 2 wins and Rulings dam Rhythmic Charm won the Group 1 2yo AJC Sires.
Universal Ruler's pure speed was exciting in his early days but the Scenic factor is now coming into play as his tough latest win was testimony to that. With so many
yearling buyers wanting a quick return we think Universal Ruler has the potential to be that type of sire but with the added Scenic factor that should help them improve with age. It's a long way off but we are already looking forward to our boy returning home for the 2010 season.

Scenic Blast's outstanding Victory in King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

PERTH'S Scenic Blast continued the domination of Australian sprinters on the world stage with a commanding victory in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last night. Scenic Blast, trained by Danny Morton and ridden by Steven Arnold, unleashed a paralysing burst to easily win the group 1 sprint over 1000 metres on the first day of the Ascot carnival.

Explosive WA sprinter Scenic Blast does Western Australia proud.

Scenic Blast ( Scenic-Daughter's Charm) was bred by Durham Lodge and sold at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearlings sale in Perth for $85000 . Unfortuately Scenic Blasts Sire Scenic(Ire) died in March of 2005..
Ironically Scenics sire the world champion Sadlers Wells who is aged 27 is still standing at stud. It is worth noting though that of all the high profile sons of Sadlers Wells to go to stud, Scenic has been clearly his best performed at stud to date.

UNIVERSAL RULER WINS GROUP 3

Universal Ruler scored a stunning win in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint at Ascot on Saturday. After drawing the river Universal Ruler was forced to do it the tough way but under hard riding from Paul Harvey responded magnificently to hold all charges at bay.
If ever a horse deserved to win a Group race it was Universal Ruler as he has had to overcome a number of various problems which have disrupted his career.

Universal Ruler who was bred by Durham Lodge was sold in the same draft of yearlings that included Scenic Blast. Only lightly raced Universal Ruler has now won 6 of his 11starts for prizemoney of $314,000.
Connections are considering options on his racing or stud career and an announcement by connections is expected soon.

THREE GROUP 1 WINS IN THREE MONTHS FOR DURHAM

Durham Lodge's amazing run over the last few months continued in New Zealand last weekend with Durham breeding the winner of the New Zealand Derby in ConistonBluebird. This win follows the Group 1 wins of Gilded Venom and Scenic Blast over the past three months.

Coniston Bluebird was sold to Bede Murray for $85,000 at the Perth Ma gic Million Sales and was from the last crop of Scenic's ever to b e sold. Murray had enjoyed previous great success with the stock of Scenic which included training Scenic best ever racehorse Universal Prince.

Murray thinks Conistion Bluebird has the right attributes and constitution to have a crack at this years Group 1 AJC Derby a race he won with Universal Prince, however Murray feels we will not see the best of Coniston Bluebird for at least another 12 months.

GROUP 1 FOR SCENIC BLAST

Scenic Blast produced an amazing finish to win the Group 1lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. With the hype on glamour horses Weekend Hussler and Apache Cat the chances of Scenic Blast appeared remote. However jockey Steven Arnold rode a perfect race in allowing Scenic Blast to settle behind the hot pace before getting to the outside to produce a barnstorming finish.
Durham Lodge bred Scenic Blast and he was sold for $85,000 in the Perth Sales. The win further emphasised his stallion Scenic's amazing record and versatility. Scenic recently sired the winner of the Melbourne Cup over 3200 mtrs and now sired the Lightning Stakes winner over 1000mtrs.Scenic also currently leads the Australian Sires premiership ahead of Redoute's Choice and Encosta De Lago.

Big rangy Blackfriars colt God Has Spoken created a big impression with a barnstorming finish to win at his first ever start at Ascot on Saturday.

shouldering his way clear after straightening God Has Spoken went into overdrive when getting clear to record a most impressive win. Trainer
Neville Parnham will consider starting him in the Magic Millions to be run in mid-February. A full brother to God Has Spoken lot 94 will be offered
For Sale by Durham Lodge at this years Perth Yerarling Sales. The day got even better for Blackfriars when the talented but unpredictable Friartruck made it

GREAT TIMING FOR BLACKFRIARS

Blackfriars promising 3yo filly Exquisite Timing backed up from a tough win last
Saturday to win the $100,00 listed Aquanita Stakes at Ascot today.
Looking to be under enormous pressure on the corner Exquisite Timing seemed
to get her 2nd wind half way down the straight before powering home to claim
her first feature win.
Exquisite Timing will now be set for the WA Oaks in April a race that would
appear a lot to her liking. This win gave Blackfriars another feature win and
a timely reminder of his credentials as a stallion of the highest calibre. With
some quality books of mares served in the last few season the future looks
extremely promising for him. Exquisite Timing's 3/4 sisters by BlackfriarsUrlay Nook and Black
In Time

SCENIC GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

SCENIC'S SON VIEWED WINS THE MELBOURNE CUP

The story of our former champion sire Scenic just had one more twist when his son Viewed won the $5.5 Million Melbourne Cup today. The win gave master trainer Bart Cummings his 12th individual cup win a record that is unlikely to ever be beaten.
Viewed travelled sweetly in the run and sprinted to the lead before holding on by the shortest of margins.

Scenic has been such a wonderful sire and this win will without doubt puts him in the top bracket of stallions to ever stand in Australia.Although Scenic is no longer with us Durham Lodge are proud to have his best ever son Universal Prince standing his first season at Durham this year.Hopefully the Scenic story will continue via Universal Prince.

This win also catapulted Scenic to the leading sire so far this season over $1 Million ahead of second place Redoute's Choice and may just give him something to chase. (Photos Slickpix)

Thoroughbred Stud Veterinarian

Dr Wendy Perriam joined the team at Durham Lodge as their Permanent Veterinarian which commenced at the start of this stud season.(2008) Wendy has been Durham Lodge's Stud Vet for seven years as an employee of Belvoir Vet Clinic.

Wendy graduated from Veterinary School in 1992, and after 3 years in a Mixed Animal Practice she focused solely on the Equine industry specializing in reproduction. Wendy returned to the West to join Dr Kim Rose at Belmont Horse Hospital, before moving to the Swan Valley to help establish Belvoir Equine Clinic. During that time Wendy's work predominantly focused on the breeding industry and she has been instrumental in Durham Lodge's success with its breeding operation.

IMPRESSIVE BLACKFRIARS DOUBLE

Very impressive wins by Amberlyn and Magical Belle provided Blackfriars with a double at Belmont Park today.

Amberlyn jumped to the front and was well rated before sprinting away to claim a comfortable victory by 3 1/2 lengths. Magical Belle settled well back in her first up run from a spell and produced a great turn of foot to win eased down by 2 1/2 lengths. Simply Adorable and the consistent Shiney Row two other tough Blackfriars mares were both unlucky placegetters at the meeting.

Universal Prince On Parade

SCENIC'S SON VIEWED WINS BRISBANE CUP.

While all local eyes were on Scenic's outstanding galloper Scenic Shot in the Brisbane cup another son of the great Scenic named Viewed demolished his opposition to win eased down by 7 lengths.

Trained by the master Bart Cummings Viewed will now have a short let up before being set for the Melbourne Cup.

Scenic Shot ran a game race under his big weight of 59kg to finish 4th and round off a wonderful campaign which has seen his career earnings jump to over the $1 Million mark.

Our champion sire Scenic is having another amazing season which see him currently ranked 5th in the nation with progeny earnings this year just a tick under $5 Million, not bad for a W.A based sire who was never given the quality or numbers that some of the other high profile sires in Australia received.

All this is good news for Scenic's best son Universal Prince who will commence stud duties at Durham Lodge this spring at the value fee of only $8,800 inc gst.

HURRICANE SKY'S CHAMPION MARE SELLS FOR $2.7 MILLION

Champion racemare Divine Madonna by Hurricane Sky sent the Magic Million Sales venue to a standstill when she sold for a Magic Million record price of $2.7 Million. She was knocked down to the bid of John Sunderland from Darley Stud. "It's obviously a lot of money, but we are delighted to be able to buy her. It's extremely hard to get mares of this quality and accordingly you have to spend a lot of money to buy them".

Hurricane Sky is having another outstanding season which sees him currently ranked No 1 active sire in Western Australia for progeny earnings in Australia this season ahead of Blackfriars and Bletchley Park. Hurricane Sky has been an outstanding proven sire since retiring to stud and will stand the 2008 season for the value fee of only $8,800 inc gst.

Booking and further information on Hurricane Sky can be made by contacting Jeremy Smith at Durham Lodge on 9571 0155 or 041 994 3356.

UNIVERSAL PRINCE TO STAND AT DURHAM LODGE

We are delighted to announce the acquisition of outstanding four time Group 1 winning racehorse and potential top class sire Universal Prince to commence stud duties at Durham Lodge this spring.

Universal Prince claimed four Group 1 victories and with career earnings just a tick under $3 Million he is clearly the best performed racehorse to ever stand at stud in Western Australia. To add to his credentials he is by Western Australia's greatest ever stallion Scenic and is without doubt Scenic's best performed son to ever retire to stud.

As a racehorse Universal Prince proved he was something special when he won his first start as a 2yo on debut by over 6 lengths. He went on to become one of the best racehorses in the nation. He ended his career with 7 Wins (4 at Group 1 Level),7 Seconds (3 at Group 1 level),3 Thirds (1 at Group 1 Level) stakes won $2,978,291.

Universal Prince has a pedigree to back up his race performance. He is by Scenic who's progeny earnings now exceed $60 million. Scenic is currently enjoying another top season this year which sees him ranked in 5th position on the Australian sires premiership. Scenic has proved to be world champion sire Sadler's Wells most successful son at stud. On the dam side Universal Prince is a full brother to Group 1 winning mare Universal Queen and also a ¾ brother in blood to successful sire Blevic.

After standing Scenic at Durham Lodge proprietor David Smith is thrilled to have acquired Universal Prince to stand this season." To have Scenic's best son to stand at Durham Lodge is something very special for everyone involved at the stud. I have followed the career of Universal Prince with a lot of interest and some of his performances on the track were breathtaking. Our criteria on the stallions we stand is extremely tough. Universal Prince ticks every box and has the performance, pedigree and presence to make a very successful sire"

Universal Prince will stand his first season at Durham Lodge at a service fee of $8,800 which represents exceptional value.

28/04/2005 - BROCCO TO STAND IN WA

After securing one of Australia best proven stallions in Hurricane Sky last week Durham Lodge have pulled of another major coup for the Western Australian breeding industry with the purchase of Dual Group 1 winner and outstanding proven sire throughout the world BROCCO (USA).

BROCCO who is currently in New Zealand entered stud in USA and Australia in 1995 where he shuttled between the two countries, he has also spent 3 stud seasons in Japan & New Zealand. BROCCO was a superstar on the racetrack earning stakes of over $1million from only 8 career starts. He was successful on four occasions including dual group 1 victories. His most prestigious win was in the BREEDERS CUP JUVINILE GROUP 1 event where he was successful by a devastating 5 lengths leaving outstanding gallopers TABASCO CAT and DEHERE in his wake.

At stud BROCCO has been an outstanding sire producing over 215 individual winners including 26 stakes performers. His progeny earnings to date are over $16million (aus). He has sired the American Champion filly JOSTLE winner of over $1.3m including two group 1 races, but importantly he has sired top class performers in Australia including the brilliant group 1 winning filly MISS PENNYMONEY as well as stakes winners BRORAMA STAR, OUTLAWS, SHELBOURNE LASS, CHARM SCENE LAND, MISS HELTERSKELTER, MR TRICKSTER, SPEEDY BELL and DEIANIRA. He also has stakes winners in Japan and New Zealand. Interestingly from very few runners in Western Australia, BROCCO has sired the handy OHIO, MYSTIC GLOW, ADVENTURER, ELLENBROOK, FAIR APPRASAL and MYSTIC FORCE.

After the tragic loss of SCENIC, we are absolutely delighted to secure an outstanding proven sire like BROCCO to offer to WA breeders. He will complement our stallion roster nicely which includes recently purchased Hurricane Sky and the very promising Blackfriars.Brocco blood is completely free of Northern Dancer and Star Kingdom which will provide a great option for breeders. Brocco is a big strong horse, can sire early runners but also can sire stock that get over ground. He produces very nice types and his stock like fast tracks which will make them ideally suited to Western Australian conditions.

BROCCO will stand his debut season in Western Australia at a value service fee of only $5,500 inclusive of GST. For further information please contact Jeremy Smith at Durham Lodge on (08) 9571 0155.

11/04/2005 - HURRICANE DUE TO HIT THE WEST!!

Durham Lodge have scored a major coup for the W.A breeding industry by securing high profile Arrowfield based proven stallion Hurricane Sky.

Hurricane Sky was a sensation on the racetrack winning over $890,000 including dual Group 1 victorys. He was a group 1 winning 2yo claming victory in the Blue Diamond Stakes in the fastest 1200 mtrs ever to be recorded by a 2yo in Australia 1.08.1.As a 3yo he raced on to claim the Group 1 AJC All Aged Stakes over 1600 mtrs. He was successful in three other stakes races and also ran 2nd in the Group 1 Australian Guineas and VATC CF Orr Stakes.

Hurricane Sky retired to stud in 1996 and has done stints shuttling to the U.K.His stock have created a huge impression since they first hit the track which resulted in his service fee rising to $22,000.
Hurricane Sky stock have earned over $14 million in stakes including 3 Group 1 winners; Grand Delight (Four time Group 1 winner, Hong Kong horse of the year and champion sprinter in 2002), River Dove winner of the Oakleigh Plate and Desert Sky dual Group 1 winner. He has sired 186 individual winners at better than 60% winners to runners and his progeny earnings per runner is just under $50,000.

His stock are having another bumper season this year and he is well and truly entrenched in top 20 sires by Winners in Australia. So far this season he has sired 52 individual winners who have earned in excess of 1 million dollars including producing 2 stakes winners and a further 7 stakes placed runners.

Hurricane Sky is one of the few dominant Star Kingdom line stallions in Australia. His pedigree is flawless being a half brother to consistent sire Umatilla and a half brother to the dam of the freakish Redoute's Choice. "Hurricane Sky continues to confirm his merit as one of the better value stallions standing in Australia,"
said Arrowfield Managing Director Mr. John Messara.

Durham Lodge proprietor David Smith is very excited to be standing Hurricane Sky and feels the horse has much to offer breeders in WA. He produces very strong early maturing types that race on, they seem to love fast tracks and his progeny are very popular in the sales ring. It's a very timely acquisition for Durham Lodge who tragically lost the services of champion sires Scenic last month

Hurricane Sky will stand his debut season in W.A at a service fee of $7,700 inc gst. This represents outstanding value for a horse of his proven performance.

8/03/2005 - SCENIC (IRE) 1986 - 2005

Durham Lodge has regret in confirming the passing of Scenic aged 18 on Sunday 6th March 2005.
Scenic will be a huge loss to the national and local breeding industry and particularly Durham Lodge which was home for Scenic since 1998.

Scenic first went to stud in 1990 and initially shuttled from Ireland until he was based permanently at Lindsay Park and Collingrove studs. Scenic proved to be a top quality sire when based there but when purchased by Durham Lodge in 1998 Scenics progeny went to another level which culminated in him finishing in the top 5 sires for earnings in Australia over a 5 year period including finishing 2nd to Danehill in the 2000 - 2001 season with progeny earning in that season over $5.4 Million.

Scenic currently has produced over 470 individual winners with progeny earnings well in excess of $40 million. Over 80 stakes performers have been sired by Scenic including 8 individual group 1 winners. This year about 30 of his yearlings have averaged over $70,000 in the major sales and with only 2 crops by Scenic now left they are sure to attract a lot of attention.

Scenic left us to soon and his loss was certainly compounded by the fact that he was not insured. Nevertheless the deeds of Scenic will go on for many years to come and with many of his daughters already producing the goods at stud he will certainly be a broodmare sire to watch closely in the future.
Ironically Scenics sire the world champion Sadlers Wells who is aged 23 is still standing at stud. It is worth noting though that of all the high profile sons of Sadlers Wells to go to stud, Scenic has been clearly his best performed at stud to date.

In closing Durham Lodge has been so proud to have a champion sire like Scenic stand at our stud. We will all cherish the memories of Scenic and his mark he has left on the national and international stage. Being involved with a stallion like Scenic is a dream for any thoroughbred stud. Scenic has certainly set a very high bar for any other stallions that stand at Durham Lodge in the future.
REST IN PEACE SCENIC YOURE A CHAMPION.

24/02/2005 - SCENIC YEARLING SELLS FOR $240,000

The demand for yearlings by Scenic reached new levels in Adelaide last night when a magnificent colt sold to a Adelaide based buyer for $240,000. Scenic yearlings averaged $97,250 in the Adelaide sales.
The Scenic yearlings have proved extremely popular throughout the major sales this year. So far 26 yearlings by Scenic have sold for over $1.8 million at a very healthy average of $71,307. Eight of Scenics yearlings have sold for $100,000 or more.
Only 6 yearlings by Scenic remain to be offered in the major sales this year. Durham Lodge will present 4 outstanding yearlings at the Perth Magic Millions sale and the remaining 2 will be sold in the Sydney Easter Yearling Sales.

21/02/2005 - SCENIC DOUBLE

Nullagine and Scenic Shot provided Scenic with a double at Belmont park last Wednesday. Scenic Shot a very well bred 2yo was extremely impressive when claiming a comfortable 4 length victory at his debut. Ridden by Paul Harvey Scenic Shot was slow away and raced well back in the field until being pulled wide at the 300mtr mark to produce a sensational sprint and win hard held. Scenic Shot immediately firmed to one of the favourites for the Magic Millions 2yo classic to be run on the 9th March. He certainly appears to have a wonderful future ahead of him.
Nullagine was successful later in the day after leading throughout to claim victory. Although challenged late Nullagine responded and now looms as a colt that could be a potential derby contender.
