After securing one of Australia best proven stallions in Hurricane Sky last week Durham Lodge have pulled of another major coup for the Western Australian breeding industry with the purchase of Dual Group 1 winner and outstanding proven sire throughout the world BROCCO (USA).
BROCCO who is currently in New Zealand entered stud in USA and Australia in 1995 where he shuttled between the two countries, he has also spent 3 stud seasons in Japan & New Zealand. BROCCO was a superstar on the racetrack earning stakes of over $1million from only 8 career starts. He was successful on four occasions including dual group 1 victories. His most prestigious win was in the BREEDERS CUP JUVINILE GROUP 1 event where he was successful by a devastating 5 lengths leaving outstanding gallopers TABASCO CAT and DEHERE in his wake.
At stud BROCCO has been an outstanding sire producing over 215 individual winners including 26 stakes performers. His progeny earnings to date are over $16million (aus). He has sired the American Champion filly JOSTLE winner of over $1.3m including two group 1 races, but importantly he has sired top class performers in Australia including the brilliant group 1 winning filly MISS PENNYMONEY as well as stakes winners BRORAMA STAR, OUTLAWS, SHELBOURNE LASS, CHARM SCENE LAND, MISS HELTERSKELTER, MR TRICKSTER, SPEEDY BELL and DEIANIRA. He also has stakes winners in Japan and New Zealand. Interestingly from very few runners in Western Australia, BROCCO has sired the handy OHIO, MYSTIC GLOW, ADVENTURER, ELLENBROOK, FAIR APPRASAL and MYSTIC FORCE.
After the tragic loss of SCENIC, we are absolutely delighted to secure an outstanding proven sire like BROCCO to offer to WA breeders. He will complement our stallion roster nicely which includes recently purchased Hurricane Sky and the very promising Blackfriars.Brocco blood is completely free of Northern Dancer and Star Kingdom which will provide a great option for breeders. Brocco is a big strong horse, can sire early runners but also can sire stock that get over ground. He produces very nice types and his stock like fast tracks which will make them ideally suited to Western Australian conditions.
BROCCO will stand his debut season in Western Australia at a value service fee of only $5,500 inclusive of GST. For further information please contact Jeremy Smith at Durham Lodge on (08) 9571 0155.
11/04/2005 - HURRICANE DUE TO HIT THE WEST!!
Durham Lodge have scored a major coup for the W.A breeding industry by securing high profile Arrowfield based proven stallion Hurricane Sky.
Hurricane Sky was a sensation on the racetrack winning over $890,000 including dual Group 1 victorys. He was a group 1 winning 2yo claming victory in the Blue Diamond Stakes in the fastest 1200 mtrs ever to be recorded by a 2yo in Australia 1.08.1.As a 3yo he raced on to claim the Group 1 AJC All Aged Stakes over 1600 mtrs. He was successful in three other stakes races and also ran 2nd in the Group 1 Australian Guineas and VATC CF Orr Stakes.
Hurricane Sky retired to stud in 1996 and has done stints shuttling to the U.K.His stock have created a huge impression since they first hit the track which resulted in his service fee rising to $22,000.
Hurricane Sky stock have earned over $14 million in stakes including 3 Group 1 winners; Grand Delight (Four time Group 1 winner, Hong Kong horse of the year and champion sprinter in 2002), River Dove winner of the Oakleigh Plate and Desert Sky dual Group 1 winner. He has sired 186 individual winners at better than 60% winners to runners and his progeny earnings per runner is just under $50,000.
His stock are having another bumper season this year and he is well and truly entrenched in top 20 sires by Winners in Australia. So far this season he has sired 52 individual winners who have earned in excess of 1 million dollars including producing 2 stakes winners and a further 7 stakes placed runners.
Hurricane Sky is one of the few dominant Star Kingdom line stallions in Australia. His pedigree is flawless being a half brother to consistent sire Umatilla and a half brother to the dam of the freakish Redoute's Choice. "Hurricane Sky continues to confirm his merit as one of the better value stallions standing in Australia,"
said Arrowfield Managing Director Mr. John Messara.
Durham Lodge proprietor David Smith is very excited to be standing Hurricane Sky and feels the horse has much to offer breeders in WA. He produces very strong early maturing types that race on, they seem to love fast tracks and his progeny are very popular in the sales ring. It's a very timely acquisition for Durham Lodge who tragically lost the services of champion sires Scenic last month
Hurricane Sky will stand his debut season in W.A at a service fee of $7,700 inc gst. This represents outstanding value for a horse of his proven performance.

8/03/2005 - SCENIC (IRE) 1986 - 2005
Durham Lodge has regret in confirming the passing of Scenic aged 18 on Sunday 6th March 2005.
Scenic will be a huge loss to the national and local breeding industry and particularly Durham Lodge which was home for Scenic since 1998.
Scenic first went to stud in 1990 and initially shuttled from Ireland until he was based permanently at Lindsay Park and Collingrove studs. Scenic proved to be a top quality sire when based there but when purchased by Durham Lodge in 1998 Scenics progeny went to another level which culminated in him finishing in the top 5 sires for earnings in Australia over a 5 year period including finishing 2nd to Danehill in the 2000 - 2001 season with progeny earning in that season over $5.4 Million.
Scenic currently has produced over 470 individual winners with progeny earnings well in excess of $40 million. Over 80 stakes performers have been sired by Scenic including 8 individual group 1 winners. This year about 30 of his yearlings have averaged over $70,000 in the major sales and with only 2 crops by Scenic now left they are sure to attract a lot of attention.
Scenic left us to soon and his loss was certainly compounded by the fact that he was not insured. Nevertheless the deeds of Scenic will go on for many years to come and with many of his daughters already producing the goods at stud he will certainly be a broodmare sire to watch closely in the future.
Ironically Scenics sire the world champion Sadlers Wells who is aged 23 is still standing at stud. It is worth noting though that of all the high profile sons of Sadlers Wells to go to stud, Scenic has been clearly his best performed at stud to date.
In closing Durham Lodge has been so proud to have a champion sire like Scenic stand at our stud. We will all cherish the memories of Scenic and his mark he has left on the national and international stage. Being involved with a stallion like Scenic is a dream for any thoroughbred stud. Scenic has certainly set a very high bar for any other stallions that stand at Durham Lodge in the future.
REST IN PEACE SCENIC YOURE A CHAMPION.
24/02/2005 - SCENIC YEARLING SELLS FOR $240,000
The demand for yearlings by Scenic reached new levels in Adelaide last night when a magnificent colt sold to a Adelaide based buyer for $240,000. Scenic yearlings averaged $97,250 in the Adelaide sales.
The Scenic yearlings have proved extremely popular throughout the major sales this year. So far 26 yearlings by Scenic have sold for over $1.8 million at a very healthy average of $71,307. Eight of Scenics yearlings have sold for $100,000 or more.
Only 6 yearlings by Scenic remain to be offered in the major sales this year. Durham Lodge will present 4 outstanding yearlings at the Perth Magic Millions sale and the remaining 2 will be sold in the Sydney Easter Yearling Sales.
21/02/2005 - SCENIC DOUBLE
Nullagine and Scenic Shot provided Scenic with a double at Belmont park last Wednesday. Scenic Shot a very well bred 2yo was extremely impressive when claiming a comfortable 4 length victory at his debut. Ridden by Paul Harvey Scenic Shot was slow away and raced well back in the field until being pulled wide at the 300mtr mark to produce a sensational sprint and win hard held. Scenic Shot immediately firmed to one of the favourites for the Magic Millions 2yo classic to be run on the 9th March. He certainly appears to have a wonderful future ahead of him.
Nullagine was successful later in the day after leading throughout to claim victory. Although challenged late Nullagine responded and now looms as a colt that could be a potential derby contender.
